Contribution to Local Economy

CPML’s contribution to the local economy can be evidenced by their working relationship with the ARA Institute, whereby CPML supports local students by giving them a chance to gain valuable experience working in a live construction environment. Our company regularly offers internships to students in engineering disciplines, serving as a crucial bridge between the academic environment and the real job market. These internships provide valuable experience and serve as a guiding light for young professionals, preparing them for a successful entry into the professional sphere.

CPML’s primary emphasis in respect of Social Sustainability is toward staff and their families’ wellbeing and welfare. It is our belief that a well-supported emotionally secure and financially stable staff and their families will be assets to not only CPML but also the wider community. By delivering our services to this project CPML will be providing positive social outcomes during the delivery phase of this project that will have lasting positive effects by:

• Creating opportunities for work experience through our partnership with Ara Institute and as part of trainee development programmes for Iwi and other students.

• Maximising training and employment opportunities for those experiencing a barrier or disadvantage in the labour market, with a focus on Mana Whenua, other Maori, Pasifika and Youth.

• Developing the skills and knowledge base of local community through collaborations with training providers and local communities.

Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives

CPML’s sustainability Policy is centred around minimising impact on the environment and use of sustainable methods and materials.

CPML as a Company is continuously endeavouring to seek best practice in our day-to-day to ensure that we maintain and improve in terms of Environmental Outcomes.

The Sustainability Policy is focused on CPML and the way we conduct our business. It represents part of our business core values. Beyond this, CPML’s input to Sustainability in relation to project deliverables revolves around providing the project team with cost advice in respect of alternative materials specified so that the client and consultant team are aware of the cost implications of different sustainable choices.

Further advice may be provided in respect of ‘whole of life’ cost if required to assist with the assessment of long-term sustainability and impacts.

In our Quantity Surveying and Project Management roles, we do not have the ability to specify materials for a project however, we are aware that the use of sustainable materials is an essential consideration and needs to take in to account:

• The source of materials – are the raw materials sustainable

• The processing – what is the impact of the manufacturing process, what are the bi-products and emissions and how much energy is consumed to process the materials

• Transportation – locality of source, distance from site and the method of transportation

• End of life sustainability. Is the product at the end of its life able to be re-purposed or recycled, or is it biodegradable? If none of these what are the impacts of disposal?

Although Sustainability initiatives can be costly in terms of design and direct construction costs, CPML will assist the team by doing life cycle costing, analysis and reporting based upon suggested design principles or materials, etc. Due to the initial cost outlay to achieve these outcomes, sustainability initiatives are often sacrificed during Value Engineering and Optioneering. CPML will be able to advise the team on the commercial impact in order that informed design decisions can be made to the benefit of the project, UoC and other Stakeholders.

Local Product and Services

As a first port of call during any procurement process CMPL fully supports using Cantabrian businesses to undertake the work. With the key team players having been involved with the Christchurch rebuild for many years, a far-reaching network has been built up. CMPL’s approach in this regard is to ‘keep it local’ and ensure the canterbury economy and employment opportunities continue to remain robust.
